Additional Living Expenses – What is covered?

Teresa Vidger - Friday, March 23, 2012

Many residents are displaced from their homes due to such things as natural disasters, water damage or fires.  Homeowners or renters insurance policies cover Additional Living Expenses (ALE) and the policy specifies the amount of coverage that is allowable.  ALE is basically intended to cover the insured person for the extra expenses he or she may incur due to being temporarily displaced from their home.

As soon as a policyholder knows that that cannot live in their home due to a disaster they should contact their agent or insurance company so they may get advice on what is covered.  Such coverage is typically about 10% to 20% of the insurance that covers the dwelling.

ALE coverage, however, covers expenses above and beyond your normal living expenses, and your insurance company will require that all claims must be supported by receipts and/or other documentation. Additional Living Expenses covers costs including temporary residence such as an apartment or home which has to be similar to the insured property.  For example if you lived in a three bedroom house the insurance company will not pay for a six bedroom home.  Other expenses that are covered may be additional food expenses that would incur such as eating out in a restaurant when staying in a hotel.  Boarding pets, relocation costs and storage are other additional costs that may be covered under your policy.

Celebrating Independence Day

Teresa Vidger - Friday, July 08, 2011

THD hope’s you had a wonderful Independence Day celebration. This year we celebrated the United States of America’s 235th birthday on July 4th

As we celebrate our nation’s birthday it is a good time to look back on why we celebrate Independence Day. On July 4, 1776 the Continental Congress adopted the statement of the United States Declaration of Independence which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration is a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. July 4, 1776, the day the wording of the Declaration was approved by Congress.

After finalizing the text on July 4, Congress issued the Declaration of Independence in several forms. It was initially published as a printed broadside that was widely distributed and read to the public. The most famous version of the Declaration, a signed copy that is usually regarded as the Declaration of Independence, is on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Although the wording of the Declaration was approved on July 4, the date of its signing has been disputed. Most historians have concluded that it was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. On the Business Side: This may be the costliest tornado & storm season

    Teresa Vidger - Friday, May 27, 2011

This Spring has been especially active for the Insurance Industry due to an unusually broad range of natural disasters that have spread from coast to coast. The costs of such catastrophes hit the Insurance Industry hard. THD services aid adjusters in managing temporary housing costs and the paperwork and reporting associated with insurance claims.

April was an unusually active month for tornadoes. Earlier in the month, a storm system brought violent weather to Oklahoma and hail in Texas, and on April 16 spurred tornadoes in North Carolina, Virginia and other states, causing widespread damage. In the wake of the April 16 twisters, more than 8,000 people registered for disaster assistance, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. On April 22, the most powerful tornado to hit St. Louis County in 44 years blew windows from the main terminal building and peeled off a section of the airport roof (BestWire, April 27, 2011).

Risk Management Solutions estimated insured losses from a twister outbreak April 25 through April 28 will total $3.5 billion to $6 billion, the highest figure to date from modeling firms. Should losses exceed $3.2 billion, the tornado outbreak would become the insurance industry's costliest tornado and thunderstorm event, exceeding losses from severe storms in May 2003, according to Catastrophe Review, an A.M. Best Special Report dated May 16, 2011

Insurance claims are burdensome enough for the adjuster without having to separately respond quickly to arrange for short term insurance housing. For insurance companies, the ability to respond quickly, competently and compassionately is essential to their continued success and the well being of their policy holders. THD was designed to relieve the adjuster burden in finding and setting up accommodations for the victim while keeping adjusters up to date and in control by delivering the best housing solutions and reporting with no surprises.

With all the natural disasters happening this season, insurance companies don’t have any time to waste; especially on paper work. Temporary Housing Directory relieves that burden by auditing all invoices to ensure you are only billed for approved expenses, and we top it all off with convenient access to our online, paperless office portal.
